UK-based developer of environmentally friendly chemical solutions Green Chemicals said on Thursday it has signed a global licensing deal with Swiss specialty chemicals group Clariant for a fire-retardant chemical for use in the textiles sector.
The flame retardant chemical is eco-friendly and wash-durable for cellulose-rich fabrics, the company said.
According to Green Chemicals, the product contains no halogens or formaldehyde, does not require an ammonia curing step and is considered to be a technological breakthrough in its field.
It can be used in a wide variety of applications including home furnishings and industrial work-wear, where fabrics need to be both flame retardant and wash-durable to recognized European standards, the company said.
"Clariant...has vast experience in marketing and selling specialty chemicals all over the world, including to the textile finishing industry," said Stephen Winston, CEO of Green Chemicals, in a statement.
The chemicals industry is eagerly seeking to replace fossil fuel based feedstock with "green" alternatives.
